
MORGANZA, Md. — Chopticon High School delivered an unforgettable spring season across multiple sports, highlighted by a state title in softball, a championship appearance in baseball, and standout performances in track and field.
Softball Secures First State Title in 40 Years
On May 23, the Chopticon varsity softball team won the Maryland Class 3A state championship, defeating Sherwood High School 5–3 at the University of Maryland Softball Complex. It was the school’s first softball state title since 1985.
Head Coach Kevin Cioppa credited the team’s chemistry and persistence throughout the postseason, where the Braves outscored their opponents 41–8.
Baseball Team Finishes as 3A State Finalist
Also on May 23, Chopticon’s baseball team advanced to the Class 3A state championship, held at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie. The Braves fell to Sherwood 8–3 but finished the season as state runner-up, capping off a strong playoff run with a 17–6 overall record.

Track & Field: Podium Finishes and a School Record
Twelve athletes from Chopticon represented the school at the MPSSAA Class 3A State Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 24–25, 2025, at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover. The girls’ team placed 15th out of 40 schools, and the boys’ team placed 17th out of 38.
- Carson Mandis claimed the state title in the shot put and placed third in discus.
- Brooke Ratliff took second place in discus.
- Madeline Matthews placed seventh in the 800-meter run and set a new Chopticon girls’ school record.


With a state championship in softball, a finalist finish in baseball, and multiple top-three showings at the track and field state meet, Chopticon High School’s spring athletes made history and inspired the community with their hard work, pride and excellence.
