Leonardtown, MD โ€“ Back on July 26, 1990, then President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. The law ensures the civil rights of people with disabilities. The ADA has been hailed as one of the most compassionate and successful civil rights laws in American history. The Commissioners of St. Maryโ€™s County marked the lawโ€™s 26th anniversary with a special ceremony.ย

The legislation established a clear and comprehensive nationwide mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities. It has sought to ensure those individuals are respected as equal citizens with equal opportunities afforded to them.

โ€œOn this the 26th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we celebrate and recognize the progress that has been made by reaffirming the principles of equality and inclusion and recommitting our efforts to reach full ADA compliance,โ€ said Commissioner Todd Morgan (4th District).

The commissioners encourage all public officials, business leaders, people with disabilities and St. Maryโ€™s County citizens to pursue the ADAโ€™s promise of equal opportunity and to celebrate the freedom that it has brought to our way of life.
