PORT REPUBLIC, Md. – After a tragic house fire completely destroyed the Lester family’s home on January 9, 2025, two GoFundMe campaigns have been launched to help the family recover. The fires that engulfed their home left them with nothing but the clothes on their backs, and the community has rallied around them in an overwhelming show of support.
The fire broke out around 12:22 p.m. on Cortona Drive near Ball Road, spreading quickly through the two-story home. Firefighters were met with an intense blaze upon arrival, and efforts to make an interior attack were abandoned after part of the home collapsed. Authorities later determined that the structure was too unstable for continued interior work, forcing them to move all efforts to defensive operations. Miraculously, all four family members, including their pets, managed to escape unharmed.
With the home a total loss, the Lester family now faces the daunting task of rebuilding their lives from scratch. A GoFundMe page created for the family has already raised over $26,000 as of Friday morning, with donations being used for immediate needs like food, clothing, and temporary housing.
In addition to the first campaign, a second GoFundMe has been set up, emphasizing the Lester family’s long history of community service and support. The second campaign has raised $14,552 so far and encourages others to return the favor to a family that has always gone above and beyond for others. The description highlights the family’s tireless dedication to volunteering in Calvert County, whether at school events, scouts, or helping friends and neighbors.
“This family, as many of you know, always goes above and beyond to help everyone,” the second GoFundMe reads. “They are Calvert County. They have endured so much these past few years and never let it show, but always show up for school functions, scouts, friends, neighbors—anything they are asked and not asked—they volunteer for. It’s time to show up for them.”
The generosity shown by the community continues to pour in, with both campaigns reflecting an outpouring of support from local residents and beyond. The Lester family has expressed deep gratitude for the kindness they have received during this difficult time and is slowly beginning the process of rebuilding, bolstered by the love and compassion of their neighbors.
