LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A routine traffic stop in Lexington Park quickly escalated into a physical confrontation that ended with two arrests, according to authorities. The incident, involving alleged impaired driving, resisting arrest and obstruction charges, unfolded in a public parking lot and has since led to court dates for both individuals following their release on bond and recognizance.

According to the Maryland State Police, the incident occurred on Feb. 8, 2026, while a trooper was on patrol traveling northbound in the area of Chancellors Run Road and Pegg Road. The trooper observed a vehicle traveling approximately 30 mph in a posted 45 mph zone and making a left-hand turn without using a turn signal.

Police conducted a traffic stop in a 7-Eleven parking lot. The driver was identified as Selvin Edeli Cardona-Cardona, 37, of St. Leonard. According to charging documents, the trooper detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Cardona-Cardona’s breath. When asked about alcohol consumption, he allegedly stated he had been drinking and had consumed eight beers.

According to charging documents, police requested that Cardona-Cardona perform standardized field sobriety tests. He exited the vehicle but then advised officers he did not wish to complete the testing. He was subsequently placed under arrest.

Police records state that as Cardona-Cardona was being taken into custody, the passenger, identified as Angelica Maria Arevalo-Jaimes, 44, also of St. Leonard, exited the vehicle. Troopers reportedly instructed her not to approach the arrest area, but she allegedly failed to comply and grabbed onto Cardona-Cardona’s stomach. Officers state they used physical force to separate her, and she was also placed under arrest.

Charging documents indicate that at that point, Cardona-Cardona allegedly became agitated and refused to place his hands behind his back. Police allege he kicked at officers, striking one officer in the chest, rolled onto his back and continued resisting before he was eventually handcuffed and secured.

Court records indicate both individuals were transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center without further incident.

Cardona-Cardona was charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and failure to obey a lawful order. He was released Feb. 8, 2026, on a $1,500 bond and is scheduled for trial March 19, 2026. Arevalo-Jaimes was charged with obstructing and hindering and resisting or interfering with arrest. She was released on her own recognizance the same day and is also scheduled for trial March 19, 2026.

Under Maryland law, second-degree assault carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison and possible fines. Resisting arrest is punishable by up to three years of incarceration and fines. Obstructing and hindering law enforcement may carry penalties of up to three years in jail and fines.
