
VALLEY LEE, Md. – New details have emerged from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office regarding an assault and illegal firearm possession incident at George B. Cecil Park, resulting in multiple charges against the suspect.
On June 1, 2024, at approximately 6:00 PM, deputies responded to a report of a physical altercation at George B. Cecil Park in Valley Lee, Maryland. According to court documents, the suspect, Javonte Taevon Fenwick, had a disagreement that escalated into a physical confrontation with another individual. Witnesses reported that Fenwick retrieved a long black handgun from the back passenger seat of a white Nissan SUV and pointed it into a crowd of people attending a child’s birthday party. The crowd reportedly included approximately 50 people, with juveniles ranging from 11 months to 15 years old.
According to witnesses, the altercation began when Fenwick and another individual allegedly had a disagreement that turned physical. Fenwick was identified by multiple witnesses and later confirmed through MVA photograph identification.
Fenwick reportedly fled the scene, however, deputies tracked the suspect vehicle to a stationary position on Stoney Court near Flat Iron Road in Valley Lee. The vehicle was being operated by Ahmaya Cutchember, who was later identified as Fenwick’s significant other. Both Fenwick and the driver were detained, with Fenwick found in the back seat of the vehicle.
According to documents, Fenwick was provided with the Notice of Advice of Right to Counsel, which he acknowledged by signing on June 1, 2024. He was informed of his rights, including the right to have a lawyer present during any judicial proceedings and the potential consequences of a conviction.
Fenwick, 18, of Hollywood, MD, has been charged with assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a regulated firearm by an individual under 21.
Fenwick was arrested and taken into custody by Deputy First Class T. Westphal without incident. He was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. Fenwick’s bail review was held on June 3, 2024, at 1:00 PM, where Judge Karen Christy Holt Chesser ordered him to be held without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 1, 2024, at 1:30 PM at the St. Mary’s County District Court.
