For 25 years Arnold Schwarzenegger has had a body building show in Columbus, Ohio where he won his first contest. This event is sometimes referred to as the Arnold Schwarzenegger Sports Festival, because it is the largest multi-sport festival in the nation with more than 18,000 athletes competing in more than 45 sports – more than the Olympics. At the Fitness Expo, around 200,000 people will flow through the doors over the 4-day weekend.

This important event brings together leaders in pro & Olympic sports, fitness, wellness, research and sports chiropractic to promote cutting edge education and support for individuals in need of this care around the world.ย

As a member of the International Chiropractors Association and an Executive member of the ICAโ€™s Sports Council, I have had the privilege of attending this Symposium on Natural Health and Fitness for 20 years. Each year it includes more and more sports and competitions at the event like: karate; gymnastics; cheerleading; fencing; arm wrestling; power lifting and of course body building.

One of the speakers this year was Dr. Ted Carrick, who is well known in the sports community for helping athletes recover from neurologic problems and severe concussion injuries, like Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburg Penguins

In a study Dr. Ted Carrick had published in The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, he wrote that cervical manipulation activates specific neurologic pathways and is able to decrease or increase brain function. Sounds like the politicians in Washington could use a few treatments.

Another speaker was Dr. Terry Schroeder, who represented our country by playing water polo and winning medals in the Olympics 4 times. He was also named Top Player in the world in 1981 and 1985. He most recently coached out team in the Olympics since 2007. He discussed common injuries from training and the brutal game itself. The battle underwater is extremely rough.

The highlight of the event is always when Governor Schwarzenegger personally stops by to talk to us and take some photos. This year I brought Flat Stanley for my son, which drew a good laugh from the crowd.

While Arnold addressed the seminar crowd of 250 doctors and trainers, he mentioned his personal belief regarding chiropractic. He said, “Everyone needs a chiropractor and Chiropractic must be seen as required, not an alternative. Chiropractic has had a very positive impact on my life and the life of my family. Weโ€™ve got to let the people know that there is a necessity, itโ€™s not even an option, itโ€™s a necessity to have a Chiropractor. As much as it is a necessity to have a dentist, you should have a chiropractor for the family.”
