INDIAN HEAD, Md. — A two-story single-family home in a remote area of Indian Head was destroyed by fire early Thursday, Jan. 29, after firefighters battled difficult terrain, heavy snow and limited water access.

Crews were dispatched shortly before 4 a.m. to a reported house fire in the 5400 block of Powerline Place. Callers told dispatchers flames were visible near the front door, but all occupants had evacuated before firefighters arrived. Some residents were reported to be sick or disabled.

Fire officials said the home, a wood-frame structure built over a crawl space, was heavily involved when crews arrived. Two 20-gallon propane tanks — one located inside near the front door and another on the porch — were reported inside the residence, adding to the hazards.

Firefighting efforts were complicated by snow-covered, unplowed roads and the home’s location roughly a mile and a half off the main roadway. Several units were unable to access the driveway, forcing firefighters to stage on nearby roads and transport personnel and equipment on foot and by utility terrain vehicles. Crews also experienced repeated water supply issues and were forced to seek secondary sources.

Despite the challenges, firefighters were able to knock down the bulk of the fire, though officials later described the scene as a “bonfire,” with the house deemed a total loss. Brush units remained on scene to contain exposure spots and prevent the fire from spreading.

One resident was reported to have burns to the face, and another person was evaluated for smoke inhalation. An additional injury involving a fall was also reported during the incident. Emergency medical services responded, and all occupants were later accounted for. No fatalities were reported.

Authorities said the residence was occupied by one person, with other occupants being pets. Information regarding assistance services was not immediately available.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
