Arrest in southern Maryland

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A 40-year-old Leonardtown man is facing numerous charges, including neglect of a minor and driving while impaired by a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), after he allegedly crashed his vehicle in Prince Frederick with a minor as a passenger. Charges were filed months after the incident, following the return of a state police lab report on his bloodwork.

The two-vehicle crash occurred on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, at approximately 2:22 p.m. on Solomons Island Road. According to the statement of probable cause, dispatchers had received reports that a blue Toyota RAV4 was “driving all over the road and swerving” just before the collision with a Honda Odyssey. The driver of the Toyota was identified as Ryan William Eglinton; his passenger was a minor, who was later transported to Children’s National Hospital.

A Calvert County Sheriff’s deputy at the scene noted that Eglinton’s behavior was “strange,” with constricted pupils, glassy eyes and a “strong chemical odor” emitting from his person. His movements were described as slow and lethargic. A search of his vehicle uncovered multiple fentanyl testing kits and Narcan.

Eglinton was arrested and transported to Calvert Health Medical Center, where he consented to a blood test. The results, received by the Sheriff’s Office on June 10, 2025, concluded that Eglinton had alprazolam (Xanax), a Schedule IV CDS, in his system at the time of the crash.

Following the lab results, charges were filed against Eglinton on July 23, 2025. They include CDS: Possess–Not Cannabis, neglect of a minor and intoxicated endangerment, in addition to numerous traffic-related offenses such as driving while impaired by CDS and reckless driving. Neglect of a minor is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Court records show Eglinton was charged via a criminal summons. A preliminary inquiry is scheduled for Sept. 8, 2025.

  1. Wow… what a story! The truth never sparks adrenaline in reading. Eglinton has a prescription for Xanax, the breathalyzer and blood test for alcohol were negative, the child was wearing a seatbelt. The officer was doing his job, but was not aware of a ruptured spleen, a punctured lung and a stomach full of blood as he sat handcuffed. Your body is like this story. You cannot view the cover… you need to open to see all. Off in a helicopter he goes spending days in Critical ICU. There is a lot more to the story, but sorry to say not as exciting to the reader. Good job Baynet!

  2. Anonymous is accused’s mom. Everyone else hopefully already realizes that this person is a danger to society. Especially to children.

  3. Please send this man to jail! He’s a hazard. Shouldn’t be around kids. Shouldn’t be allowed to drive. Shouldn’t even be allowed to socialize with others.
