CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — The Grinch is a beloved Christmas character, and millions of children across America adore the grumpy green man with a secret heart of gold. The “Grinch” recently met with Cayson, a local Southern Maryland boy who has a love for the popular Dr. Seuss character.
“Cayson is 10 years old and was diagnosed with autism around two years old. He was nonverbal until he was four years old. From an early age, he has adored the Grinch and loves everything related to him,” said Cayson’s mother, Lisa.
Tariq Majeed dresses up as the Grinch each year to spread Christmas cheer across Charles County. Lisa said, “My sweet boy was so excited about seeing him and would beg every day to go out to shops, hoping to see him.”
Cayson was in for a treat when his mother and Tariq connected on social media to make his holiday dream come true. Lisa said, “We surprised him right after school. I took Cayson to the park, and we were happily playing on the slides. Little did Cayson know, the Grinch was lurking around.”

“He came up to Cayson, greeted him by his name, and pretended to stalk him and take him back to Whoville. Cayson was so excited! He had a full conversation with the Grinch and even posed for pictures and videos with him,” said Lisa.
The meeting with Cayson also brought unexpected cheer to the Grinch’s holiday. Tariq told The BayNet, “When I saw Cayson, I can honestly say that my heart grew three times bigger right then. He was so full of joy, and he had a smile that made you feel like he was your best friend.”
Interactions with friendly community members like Tariq help create a sense of wonder in children. The Southern Maryland Grinch also participates in the La Plata Toys for Tots run every Christmas to raise awareness for a cause that helps underprivileged youth during the holidays.
“After they finished talking for some time, they gave each other a hug and a high five. Tariq made my son’s entire day and treated him with such grace and kindness. Cayson will never forget this,” said Lisa.
Those who dress up as popular holiday figures offer a unique service to local children, and they deserve to be commended for their thoughtful actions. Cayson’s mother speaks for all of Southern Maryland when she says, “Thank you so very much, Grinch!”

The Man Behind the Grinch – Tariq’s Story
Tariq “The Grinch” Majeed has worked to spread Christmas cheer throughout Southern Maryland for four years. When he’s not meeting with fans like Cayson, Tariq routinely dresses up for community events like the Toys for Tots run in La Plata. However, no good story is complete without the inspiration fueling the mission.
“Jim Carrey’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is my all-time favorite Christmas movie. I saw how people treated the Grinch when he just wanted to be loved and treated equally. The Grinch is looked at as the bad guy,” said Tariq.
By acknowledging how the Grinch was mistreated, Tariq saw an opportunity to show the world that appearance isn’t what’s important—it’s the heart that counts.
Tariq shared, “I started dressing up as the Grinch and making it a fun, loving character whose heart was always three times bigger. I don’t scare kids because I want them to see the good in the Grinch. This way kids can overcome their fears and understand that just because you look different, that doesn’t mean you should be treated differently.”
Though mall Santas are also beloved figures during the Christmas season, Tariq’s unique take on Jim Carrey’s Grinch is particularly special because he offers an important lesson for the Southern Maryland community during the holidays.
The Grinch feels thankful for all the time he gets to spend with the people of Charles County. Tariq told The BayNet, “I take every encounter with the community as a blessing because I truly believe that this is my passion and this is what God wants me to do.”
The Grinch’s work is never finished, so you might be able to catch him spreading the Christmas spirit throughout Charles County next December. Tariq has brought smiles and cheer to Southern Maryland for years, and young people like Cayson will never forget meeting the fabled holiday character.
