LEONARDTOWN, Md. — An inmate at the St. Mary’s County Detention Center is facing additional charges after allegedly assaulting a correctional officer by throwing objects during an incident inside the facility, according to court documents.

David Lee Jones, 47, of Churchton, is charged with second-degree assault on a correctional employee following the April 12, 2026 incident.

Deputies responded to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center for a reported assault on staff. Authorities identified Jones, who was already incarcerated at the facility, as the suspect.

Investigators reported that Jones threw a plastic cup at a correctional officer. Video footage reviewed by deputies showed Jones also throwing a plastic cup containing powdered coffee, striking the officer in the shoulder.

The officer told investigators he had been assisting medical staff at the time of the incident.

Jones was subsequently charged in connection with the incident.

Court records show he was released on an unsecured personal bond of $1,500.

A hearing is set for May 14, 2026, in St. Mary’s District Court.

Under Maryland law, second-degree assault involving a correctional employee carries a potential penalty of up to 10 years in prison and/or a $2,500 fine.
