Jeffrey Silberschlag, music director, and the Chesapeake Orchestra feature violinist Josรฉ Cueto, cellist Suzanne Orban, violist Jennifer Rende, and narrator Deborah Greitzer in Straussโ โDon Quixoteโ on Friday, July 7 at the River Concert Series.ย Also enjoy the premiere of Chen Yiโs โMomentumโ and Rachmaninoffโs โSymphonic Dances.โ The free concert is on the Townhouse Green at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, in Southern Maryland. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Grounds open at 5 p.m.
Josรฉ Cueto, violinist, has been admired by both the public and the critics for his “solid technique, as well as his rich and beautiful tone” (El Mundo, San Juan). Recently, he appeared at the La Gesse Festival in France and the Autunno Musicale Veronese in Italy.ย Cueto is concertmaster of the Baltimore Opera Orchestra and Concert Artists of Baltimore.
Cellist Suzanne Orban, is a principal cellist of the Virginia Chamber Orchestra and member of Opus Tango Ensemble. She also serves as cello professor at St. Maryโs College of Maryland.
Violist Jennifer Rende is principal violist for the Baltimore Opera Company and the Concert Artists of Baltimore. She performs regularly with the Wolf Trap Summer Opera Company and makes special appearances at various embassy performances in Washington, D.C.
Deborah Greitzer, an accomplished bassoonist, has frequently appeared as a narrator and is a two-time winner of the Artists International Prize for Chamber Music and a recipient of the George Wellington Miles Award, Yale University.
The eveningโs music includes the premiere of Chinese composer Chen Yiโs โMomentum.โ Yi received bachelor and master degrees in music composition from the Central Conservatory in Beijing, China, and a doctor of musical arts degree from Columbia University in New York City.ย ย
Along with a night of unforgettable music, concert-goers can also feast on the offerings of more than 25 food vendors, selling everything from gourmet dinners and crab cakes to ice cream treats and tangy barbecue. Offerings along River Festival Avenue include glow sticks for the children, massages for parents, and information about local community organizations.
The weekendโs events also include a free Cutting Edge Saturday concert. The jazz group Quatronic, with featured saxophonist Rick Humphreys, performs on Saturday, July 8 at 8 and 9:15 p.m. in the collegeโs Campus Center Courtyard.
On Sunday, July 9 at 4 p.m., The River Seriesโ Up Close Sunday concert will be at Trinity Church.
The summerโs music series also includes the River Seriesโ At the Movies night on Wednesday, July 12 when the film โRed Violinโ will be shown in the Campus Centerโs Cole Cinema at 7 p.m. After the film, violinist Josรฉ Cueto will perform on the upper deck. These events are free and open to the public.
The River Concert Series continues on consecutive Friday evenings through July 28.
