Tuesday, August 3 is the twenty-seventh Annual National Night Out. The event is, a unique crime and drug prevention affair sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.

Last year’s NNO campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from many neighborhoods across Southern Maryland. Nationwide, over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases; in all, over 36 million people, participated in NNO 2009.

The annual event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and create support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; It is hoped that the effort will bolster neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, which in turn will send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

In St. Mary’s County the following neighborhoods are participating:
