MARYLAND – According to an Emerson College Polling survey, former Governor Larry Hogan is leading the Republican senate primary with 43% of voters’ support ahead of the primary election on May 14. Hogan also fared well against Democratic top runners Rep. David Trone and County Executive Angela Alsobrooks in hypothetical general election matchups.

In the Republican primary, Hogan is firmly in the lead according to this poll with 43% of support. “No other candidate reaches double digits, and 43% are undecided,” said Emerson College Polling.

Rep. David Trone is currently leading the Democratic primary race with 32% of voters’ support, while County Executive Alsobrooks has 17% support. However, 37% of Democratic voters remain undecided.

In a hypothetical general election matchup between Hogan and Alsobrooks, Hogan is leading in the polls with 44% support, while 37% support Alsobrooks and 19% of voters are undecided.

By replacing Alsobrooks with Trone, the election results in a tie; both candidates receive 42% of the vote while 16% remain undecided.

“In addition to the majority of Republican voters’ support in the general election, Hogan also holds broad appeal in a matchup against Trone among independents, at 48%, and also garners nearly a quarter of Democratic voters’ support,” Spencer Kimball, Executive Director of Emerson College Polling, said in a press release. “In a matchup between Hogan and Alsobrooks, independents support Hogan 43% to 18%, and 31% of Democrats support Hogan.”

Also according to the poll, “The economy (23%) and crime (21%) are considered the most important issues for Maryland voters, followed by housing affordability (11%), education (10%), immigration (10%), healthcare (10%), and threats to democracy (8%)…A plurality of Maryland voters (46%) think things in the state are headed in the right direction, while 38% think things are on the wrong track.”

The Emerson College Polling/The Hill/DC News Now poll was conducted February 12-13, 2024. The sample consisted of 1,000 Maryland registered voters and with a credibility interval, similar to a poll’s margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
