LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A routine traffic stop quickly escalated into a drug investigation when deputies discovered multiple illegal substances and paraphernalia in a vehicle, ultimately leading to charges against a Leonardtown woman.
According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO), Jessica Adele Kearney, 40, of Leonardtown, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped March 13, 2026, near the intersection of Chancellors Run Road and Great Mills Road in Lexington Park. Deputies initially observed that the vehicle had a headlight out on the passenger side and initiated a traffic stop.
According to court documents, while retrieving the driver’s information, officers observed capped syringes in plain view inside the vehicle. Both the driver and Kearney were removed from the vehicle for further investigation. When Kearney requested her coat from the vehicle, deputies searched it and discovered an improvised smoking device containing what appeared to be cocaine residue.
Police reports state, a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a small bag on the passenger-side floorboard containing a white powdery substance and a straw, suspected to be cocaine. A personal search of Kearney initially yielded no results; however, a secondary search upon arrival at the detention center, correctional officers allegedly uncovered approximately 3 grams of crack cocaine hidden in Kearney’s bra.
Charging documents show Kearney was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance not cannabis, two counts of CDS paraphernalia possession, altering or destroying physical evidence, and possession of contraband in a place of confinement. She was released on personal recognizance March 16, 2026, and her trial is scheduled for April 28, 2026.
