(Hollywood, MD) Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties may be small compared to the other counties in Maryland but it did not stop our local tennis players from scoring big on the big stage. Last weekend, the St. Mary’s 7.5 women’s combo team captained by Wilman Cheung defeated eight other teams in the USTA Mid-Atlantic Maryland Regional Championships to bring home the trophy in the three-day USTA-sanctioned tournament held in the scenic city of Frederick, Maryland.
Nine teams from Maryland were divided into two flights of five and four teams to play in a round-robin competition. After some grueling matches played on Friday and Saturday, the winner of each flight competed in the finals on Sunday. The St. Mary’s team defeated the Howard team to become the USTA 2015 Mid-Atlantic Maryland Women’s 7.5 Combo champion.
After winning the regular season with a 7-1 record, Team Cheung went into the Regional Championships full of confidence. Matches in the three-day event were highly competitive and fun-filled. Despite the tough matches, the team of 13 women played their hearts out and in the end, their hard work and perseverance paid off.
In an interview with TheBayNet.com, Captain Cheung said, “I could not have asked for a better group of women to be my teammates. We work hard on improving our individual and doubles tennis skills throughout the year. Not only do we support our teammates on the courts, we also support each other off the courts. It is the camaraderie among us that makes us a strong team.”
The USTA offers several women’s, men’s, and juniors’ tennis leagues throughout the year. If you are interested in keeping fit while having fun, pick up a racket and head to one of the many public tennis courts in our area or check out the Calvert County Tennis Association website www.calverttennis.org or St. Mary’s Tennis Association website www.stmarystennis.org for tennis in your area. Tennis is a lifetime sport. It is never too late to start!
