LUSBY, Md. — A Lusby man is facing multiple charges after investigators say a vulnerable adult was found living in unsafe and neglectful conditions inside a Calvert County home, according to court documents.
Brian Matthew Zurmuhlen, 60, of Lusby, has been charged with second-degree assault and two counts of abuse of a vulnerable adult.
According to charging documents filed in Calvert District Court, deputies responded to a home on Gunsmoke Trail on March 21, 2026, after receiving a report of possible elder abuse. When officers arrived, they initially had difficulty making contact with anyone inside the residence. Authorities observed the home appeared secured from the inside, with doors locked and windows covered.
Investigators eventually made contact with Zurmuhlen and entered the home, where they located an elderly woman in an upstairs bedroom. Officers reported observing visible injuries, including bruising to her face and multiple abrasions. The woman was also found in conditions that authorities described as unsanitary, with bodily fluids and waste present in the bedroom area.
Court records state the bedroom had a lock on the exterior of the door, and investigators determined the woman’s ability to freely leave the room was restricted. A container described as being used as a makeshift bathroom was also found in the room.
Emergency medical personnel evaluated the woman and noted signs consistent with malnourishment, including significant weight loss and muscle deterioration. Investigators also documented additional bruising on her wrists and arms.
During the investigation, authorities allege that Zurmuhlen admitted to limiting the woman’s access to parts of the home and food. Further interviews indicated she relied on him for care and supervision.
The alleged incidents occurred between March 14 and March 21, 2026, according to court filings.
An arrest warrant was initially issued on March 26, 2026, but was later recalled and replaced with a summons, which was served on March 30, 2026, court records show.
A hearing is set for May 11, 2026 in Calvert District Court.
