Arrest in southern Maryland

OCEAN CITY, Md. — A Lusby man already facing obscene material charges was arrested again after authorities say he threw pizza and a cell phone at a woman during a domestic dispute at an Ocean City hotel. Dakota Mckain Donnells, 27, of Lusby, faces assault and property destruction charges stemming from the Oct. 11, 2025, incident.

Ocean City Police responded to the Hyatt Hotel on 16th Street around 12:20 a.m. for reports of a domestic assault. Court records show Donnells and the woman were staying together at the hotel when an argument reportedly erupted after Donnells allegedly went through her phone.

According to authorities, Donnells found something on the phone “he wasn’t happy with” and began throwing items at the woman. Court filings allege Donnells threw pizza at her, striking her. Officers reported observing pizza sauce on her sweatshirt and in her hair. Documents further state Donnells threw pizza across the room, hitting the wall, pillow, and door.

Investigators allege Donnells also threw the woman’s phone at her head. She told police she was not injured and reported no visible bump. Officers confirmed there was no apparent injury during their investigation.

Court papers state Donnells then allegedly damaged the woman’s Apple Watch while she was in the bathroom. Records show he removed the watch bands and threw the device into the toilet. The woman estimated the damage at $50.

When officers attempted to interview Donnells about the incident, court documents indicate he was uncooperative and declined to speak with investigators. Officers placed Donnells under arrest without further incident.

Donnells faces two misdemeanor charges, including second-degree assault and malicious destruction of property valued under $1,000. Second-degree assault carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment and a $2,500 fine if convicted. Malicious destruction of property under $1,000 carries a maximum sentence of 60 days’ incarceration and a $500 fine if convicted.

Donnells was initially held without bond following his arrest. Judge Neil E. Axel presided over a bail review hearing on Oct. 14, 2025, and released Donnells on personal recognizance. The Worcester County Public Defender’s Office entered an appearance on Oct. 14, 2025. Defense counsel filed motions for a speedy trial and discovery inspection on the same date.

This arrest marks Donnells’ second encounter with law enforcement within weeks. Court filings show he faces separate charges in Calvert County for allegedly posting obscene material at his workplace in Lusby. Those charges include displaying obscene matter to a minor and displaying obscene material at a workplace.

A trial on the Ocean City charges is scheduled for Nov. 25, 2025, at 9 a.m. in Worcester County District Court in Ocean City.

All proceedings will take place in Worcester County District Court. The State’s Attorney’s Office for Worcester County is prosecuting both charges.
