WALDORF, Md. — An Upper Marlboro man has been charged with theft and second-degree assault following an incident at a Waldorf department store, according to charging documents filed in Charles County District Court.

Court records show Brian Christopher Thornley, 40, is charged with misdemeanor theft of property valued at less than $100 and misdemeanor second-degree assault stemming from an incident on Dec. 21, 2025, at the Macy’s store located at St. Charles Towne Center.

According to a statement of probable cause, officers with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to the store after loss prevention personnel reported a suspected theft. Investigators allege Thornley took a gray Polo Ralph Lauren hat valued at $65, removed the security sensor using pliers, concealed the item on his person and attempted to leave the store without paying.

The report states that store employees confronted Thornley as he exited past all points of sale. During the encounter, Thornley allegedly resisted efforts to stop him and pushed a loss prevention employee while attempting to flee. Employees were able to detain him until deputies arrived.

Charging documents indicate the incident followed a prior theft involving Thornley at the same store, in which he was not apprehended.

Thornley was taken into custody, advised of his rights, and transported to the Charles County Detention Center, where he was processed and charged. Court records show he was released on his own recognizance later that day.

A trial scheduling hearing is set for Feb. 20, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
