Creighton Perkins
Leonardtown, MD — A man who allegedly choked his father into unconsciousness has been sentenced after pleading guilty to second-degree assault. Creighton Perkins, 31, of Kansas City, MO was sentenced March 30 in St. Maryโs County Circuit Court by Judge Michael Stamm.
The incident happened July 8, 2014 at the home of Perkinsโ parents on Goddard Court in Leonardtown. According to police reports at the time, Perkins allegedly shoved his father onto a couch and began to strangle him and then punched him in the head.
The incident occurred after a non-trespass order has been issued and Perkins had been previously charged with trespassing on the property.
Perkins served 196 days awaiting trial on the trespass and assault charges brought against him. Judge Stamm sentenced Perkins to five years in jail but suspended it down to the time he has already served. He will be on three yearโs supervised probation.
While in jail Perkins received anger management counseling and told the judge he had benefited from it and thanked Stamm for giving him that opportunity.
The estrangement between Perkins and his parents apparently has been reconciled since his incarceration and they had asked the state not to proceed with the charges. But Senior States Attorney Joseph Stanalonis said the state decided to press the charges to make sure that Perkins received the proper anger management counseling.
Perkins was represented by public defender Sean Moran at the sentencing hearing.
The judge told Perkins his probation could be transferred back to Missouri but he said he had the possibility of a job locally and probably would stay and also continue his counseling.
