ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The Maryland Dove is saying goodbye for the winter. The magnificent replica of Maryland’s most important vessel undergoes maintenance each year in order to keep it in presentable shape for the warmer seasons, and like in 2025, it’s out of commission once again. The Dove has been taken to Dennis Point Marina to receive a new coat of paint, where it’ll likely remain until the spring.
The Maryland Dove is a gorgeous mix of brown, black and red, with an overall length of about 84 feet. Iver C. Franzen is the prominent architect behind the current-day Dove, though the 2026 version is also a recreation of the original replica that was constructed in 1978.
The current replica debuted in 2022, undergoing maintenance each year to keep it in good condition for sailing. Though it’s out of commission during the winter, the Maryland Dove can be visited when temperatures are warmer. The vessel will likely be back in use in spring 2026 at the earliest.
A recent Facebook post offers a glimpse at the work being performed on the Maryland Dove, displaying its updated props and fresh paint. Though it’s a replica, the new Dove is known for its attention to detail and beautiful craftsmanship.

What Is The Maryland Dove?
The Maryland Dove sailed the ocean between 1633 and 1634, one of the first ships to make the journey from England to the American colonies. This small vessel, alongside the larger Ark ship, was an important tool in transporting the very first colonists to Maryland.
A charming cargo ship with a maximum capacity of 40 tons, the original Dove stayed in use as a trading ship until August 1635, when the famous vessel was likely lost at sea.
Nobody ever caught a glimpse of the first Maryland Dove after its planned voyage to England in 1635, leading many to believe that it may have been lost in the ocean. Despite the loss, the Dove has remained a notable piece of Maryland history, and the modern replica is proof of its importance.
