ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Maryland State Department of Education is seeking volunteers to serve on its Secondary Mathematics Pathways Standards and Frameworks Validation Committee (SFVC). Applications are due Sept. 26.

SFVCs are being formed in several subject areas, including math, social studies, and English and language arts (ELA), to help guide curriculum standards and content statewide. The committees meet to review the curriculum and make recommendations.

The SFVCs will comprise a diverse set of Maryland volunteer residents. The committees will include teachers, parents, associated content experts, local education agency staff and MSDE staff. For this particular committee, the department is specifically looking for math educators and content experts to volunteer.

According to the application, the Secondary Mathematics Pathways SFVC will “establish clear, statewide expectations for what students should experience and achieve in secondary mathematics pathways. These expectations will make explicit how mathematics pathways extend and deepen learning from the Integrated Algebra sequence, provide coherence across course options, and reflect the rigor needed for college and career readiness.”

In 2025, 26.5% of Maryland students reached proficiency in math, compared to 24.1% in 2024 and 21.0% in the 2021-22 school year.

The 2023-24 school year report shows Calvert, St. Mary’s and Charles counties with 32.8%, 29.1% and 15% proficiency, respectively. Calvert ranked fifth in the state for math, and no Maryland county posted above 41.1% (Howard).

As MDSE recruits for these committees, it’s clear that there’s important work to do to help students advance in math statewide and at the county level, and give educators the right tools to make those achievements possible.

  1. Nothing is wrong with our current curriculum. If XX identifies as XY it equals XY. We can snip one limb off the second X and it becomes a Y. In fact, this should be done to all X’s at their beginning and paid for by you. Those that don’t agree are KK+Ks.
