southern Maryland traffic

CALIFORNIA, Md. – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is set to enhance traffic flow and safety in the California, Lexington Park, and Great Mills areas through the implementation of adaptive signal technology at key intersections along MD 235 and MD 246. This initiative aims to address longstanding congestion and improve overall transportation efficiency in these rapidly developing communities.

The targeted intersections for these upgrades include those along MD 235 (Three Notch Road) from Airport View Drive to MD 246 (Great Mills Road) and from MD 235 to the entrance of the St. Mary’s Square shopping center on MD 246.

Residents and commuters can expect to see MDOT SHA crews conducting advanced field stakeouts and other preliminary work in these areas. The scope of construction will vary by intersection, encompassing tasks such as upgrading communications equipment and installing new pavement markings.

These improvements are part of a broader strategy to enhance traffic operations and safety in the region. Historically, intersections like MD 5/MD 471 and MD 5/MD 246 have experienced failing Levels of Service (LOS), with significant delays during peak hours. For instance, the MD 5/MD 471 intersection has been operating at LOS E during morning peak hours and LOS D in the evenings, with future projections indicating a decline to LOS F by 2040 if no interventions are made.

The adaptive signal technology is expected to alleviate congestion, reduce delays, and enhance safety by optimizing traffic signal timings in real-time based on current traffic conditions.
