ANNAPOLIS, MD — Former Maryland Senate President Mike Miller has died at age 78. Miller represented the state for more than 40 years until his battle with cancer forced him to retire last month.
Governor Larry Hogan said he’d lost a dear lifelong friend. “Serving the people of our great state was Mike Miller’s life’s work, and he did so with unrelenting passion and courage for a remarkable 50 years. Even as he waged a hard-fought battle with cancer, I was blessed to continue to benefit from Mike’s wisdom and trademark humor. He was, in every sense, a lion of the Senate.”
The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners has issued the following statement:
โOn behalf of the citizens of Calvert County, we were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Mike Miller today; he was a first-rate legislator, a man of the highest integrity and a true gentleman. His accomplishments on behalf of District 27 and all Marylanders over the past five decades are unmatched. The enduring effects of his distinguished service and tremendous leadership will be felt for many, many years to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with Senator Millerโs wife, Patti, his children and grandchildren, and his many family and friends. Calvert County and the state of Maryland have lost one of its most respected leaders and he will be sorely missed.โ
Senator Chris Van Hollen said, “Maryland lost a giant and I have lost a dear friend. Governors have come and gone, but Mike Miller was a historic figure and force of nature pushing Maryland forward. His legacy of results for our state is unmatched. Katherine and I send our love to Patty and his family.”
Congressman Steny H. Hoyer said, โI am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend Senator Thomas V. โMikeโ Miller Jr. For more than 50 years, I was privileged to call Mike a close friend. Throughout our many years working together, I treasured his counsel and friendship.
โThe state of Maryland mourns the passing of Mike, a giant in the Senate and a champion for working families. I will miss my friend and colleague. My prayers are with Patti and the entire Miller family as they grieve the loss of a wonderful man.โ
Miller is survived by his wife Patti, 5 children, and 15 grandchildren.ย
Governor Hogan ordered all Maryland flags to fly at half-staff until sunset on the day Miller is interred.ย
