Pope’s Creek, MD – A chance meeting between two cars on a country lane erupted in an argument and gunfire that left one man dead in Popeโ€™s Creek Sunday, Sept. 25.

Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office homicide detectives identified the victim of the homicide and shooting that took place in the 9100 block of Mona Farm Place in La Plata as Mason Cameron Atkins, 18, of Deale.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim and his friends learned of a party on Mona Farm Place and showed up uninvited.

When they pulled up to the entrance of the driveway, they were asked to leave.

CCSO detectives said the group complied and drove about a half mile away, heading toward the main highway.

It was when they passed other vehicles stopped on the narrow road that an argument with the occupants of another car escalated to violence.

The unknown suspects in the other vehicle produced a gun and fired shots, striking Atkins and his friend.

The suspects fled the scene.

The victims drove to Popes Creek Road where they called 911.

Detectives are working on leads and anyone with information about this case is asked to call Det. Shankster at 301-609- 6513.ย
