NANJEMOY, Md. โ€” Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions are battling a large, wind-driven Nanjemoy brush fire that has rapidly grown to over six acres and is spreading through the treetops. Command on the scene has requested a helicopter for assistance as ground crews contend with difficult terrain and equipment challenges.

The fire was first reported on Saturday, August 30, 2025, around 3:10 p.m., in a wooded area on Bluff Point Road. Calls came from as far away as King George and Stafford counties in Virginia, with people reporting a large column of smoke from across the Potomac River. Consequently, what was initially reported as a two-acre fire quickly escalated.

Crews on the ground immediately faced significant challenges. According to emergency communications, firefighters reported running out of hose and having trouble accessing the fire through thick brush. At one point, two separate brush trucks became stuck in the difficult terrain. In addition, one unit reported their pump was not working, further complicating the firefight.

As the wind picked up, the Nanjemoy brush fire began “crowning,” a dangerous condition where the fire spreads through the tops of the trees. Therefore, the incident commander requested a full “General Fire Alarm” to bring in more resources from surrounding companies. They also requested a bulldozer from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forestry Service to cut a fire line and a helicopter to assist

The area is remote, and the landowner is reportedly assisting crews with access. This is a rapidly developing situation. The BayNet will provide updates as they become available.
