INDIAN HEAD, Md. – Opening Night Productions has announced its 2026 season with the debut of three new and very different plays. Opening Night Productions is dedicated to the production of never-before-seen plays by Maryland, especially Southern Maryland, playwrights. All performances are at the Indian Head Black Box Theatre in Charles County.
The season gets underway March 13-15 with โA Contrary Woman,โ by Richard Thompson, of Calvert County. โA Contrary Womanโ is the self-description of Jeannette Rankin, an advocate of womenโs voting rights who in her 90th year looks back on her exciting life. The first woman elected to Congress, during her two terms in office Rankin voted against the declarations of war for World Wars One and Two, standing alone to cast the sole World War Two โNoโ vote.
That is followed in June by โNorth Wind,โ by Montgomery County playwright Sarah Cosgrove Gaumond. A blizzard brings together an unlikely trio of characters in a neighborhood bar. The three, an older couple and a younger woman, face the question, โHow do you move forward when everything you see reminds you of what youโve lost?โ Performance dates are June 19-21 and 26-28.
The final show of the season is a new musical, โAlmost Opposites Attract,โ by Richard Thompson and St. Maryโs County resident Sara Zylak Nelson. This romantic comedy musical follows the unlikely twists and turns of an enduring love over the space of 50 years as seen through the lens of two college reunions, the 25th and the 50th. Performance dates are October 16-18 and 23-25.
Ticket prices for all shows are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. For special group sale rates, contact 410-610-6943, visit www.openingnightproductions.org or email openingnites@gmail.com.
