
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — The stage is set for Prince George’s County’s upcoming special election to fill the county executive position vacated by Angela Alsobrooks, who resigned after being elected to the U.S. Senate. The primary election is scheduled for March 4, 2025, with the general election to follow on May 27, 2025.
Six candidates have filed to compete for the role, each offering distinct backgrounds and priorities for Maryland’s second-most populous jurisdiction.
The Candidates
Rushern Baker
Rushern Baker previously served as Prince George’s County executive from 2010 to 2018. During his tenure, he oversaw economic development projects such as National Harbor and worked to address financial challenges within the county. Baker has focused his campaign on economic growth and infrastructure investment.
Alonzo Washington
Alonzo Washington is a state senator representing Maryland’s 22nd District. He has been involved in legislative efforts on education, housing, and social policy. Washington emphasizes economic equity and expanded opportunities as key parts of his campaign.
Aisha Braveboy
Aisha Braveboy is the current Prince George’s County state’s attorney, a position she has held since 2018. She has worked on initiatives involving criminal justice reform and diversion programs. Braveboy’s campaign includes proposals to address systemic challenges in the justice system.
Jolene Ivey
Jolene Ivey is the chair of the Prince George’s County Council and a former Maryland state delegate. She has focused on issues such as education funding and support for small businesses. Ivey has highlighted transportation improvements as a key part of her platform.
Calvin Hawkins
Calvin Hawkins is an at-large member of the Prince George’s County Council. He has emphasized transparency in governance and addressing economic disparities across the county. Hawkins has also focused on improving infrastructure in underserved areas.
Tonya Sweat
Tonya Sweat, an attorney and business owner, has a background in public service and law. She has proposed reforms to improve government accountability and expand economic opportunities for residents.
The Stakes
The winners of the special election will serve the remainder of Alsobrooks’ term, concluding in December 2026. Acting County Executive Tara Jackson is currently filling the role but has stated she does not plan to run.
