Solomons, MD โ€“ Brutal weather greeted the group of participants running and walking in the 14th annual Step-By-Step 5 Kilometer (K) race in Solomons Saturday, Nov. 1. Although the ranks were held low due to the rain and high windโ€”only 61 completed the course which began and ended at Calvert Marine Museumโ€”the brave athletes held their heads up high and they marched through the storm.

As he has done many times before–four years in a row, David Raley, 31 of Lexington Park, crossed the finish line first, posting a time of 17 minutes, 37 seconds. Hot on his heels was Greg Imhof, 41, who logged a time of 17 minutes, 44 seconds. Showing at third was Brian Miller, 38 of St. Leonard, with a time of 18 minutes, 54 seconds.

The 5Kโ€™s top female finishers were Tracie Fisher, 43 (26 minutes, 28 seconds); Melody Jones, 12 (26 minutes, 57 seconds) and Laurel Cahill, 29 (27 minutes, 14 seconds).

The Step-By-Step 5K is held annually on the first Saturday in November and honors the memory of Mike Blackwell, who was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident on Broomes Island Road in early 2001. Several family members, included Blackwellโ€™s widow, Bonnie, were there to see the participants begin the race.

The race is sponsored by the Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse (CAASA), which uses the money raised for its programs.
