LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Energy, teamwork and community spirit filled the campus of St. Mary’s Ryken High School on April 9 as Special Olympics St. Mary’s County hosted its Annual Spring Olympics 2026 — the largest event of its kind to date.

This year’s games welcomed 195 participants, supported by approximately 300 student escorts who helped guide athletes to their events throughout the day. The event also relied on nearly 100 volunteers, highlighting both the scale of the competition and the ongoing need for community support.

“The event had close to 100 volunteers,” said Area Director Jeff Hagen, noting that while turnout was strong, recruiting volunteers has remained a challenge. “It’s been difficult to get volunteers.”

Despite those challenges, the day ran with precision and enthusiasm, thanks in large part to partnerships across the community. Hagen said Naval Air Station Patuxent River brought the largest group of volunteers, helping ensure athletes had the support they needed at every stage of competition.

Now in its fifth year at Ryken, the venue has proven to be an ideal host site.

“It’s convenient and accessible,” Hagen said, emphasizing the importance of a location that accommodates both athletes and spectators.

Throughout the day, student escorts played a key role, assisting athletes with navigating events and offering encouragement, which held a dynamic that underscored the inclusive mission of Special Olympics. The collaboration between students, volunteers and athletes created an atmosphere that was as much about connection as it was competition.

Looking ahead, organizers are focused on expanding participation and programming. Hagen issued a call to action for the community:

“We are looking [for] students that are above the age of 8 to come out and join our community program,” he said.

The organization is also continuing to grow its athletic offerings, with pickleball set to become its 15th sport by the end of the month — a move aimed at increasing accessibility and engagement for athletes of all abilities.
