The 64th annual Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association Convention was held the weekend of April 30 and May 1. The event was held at the Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department (Company 3).
In addition to a parade, the Sunday, May 1 schedule included numerous contests, including tug o’ war, the battle of the buckets, the bucket brigade and the fastest dress obstacle course.
The event coincided with the annual carnival at Company 3.
A pall was cast over the event due to the recent passing of former Company 3 Emergency Medical Services Chief Edward Richard “Ricky” Smith Jr. The beloved and respected former chief was also known by the nicknames “Underdog” and “Pops.”
