Arrest Released on Recognizance Southern Maryland

NANJEMOY, Md. — A Nanjemoy man is facing a first-degree assault charge after police say he pointed a rifle at two people during an incident on Nov. 24, 2025, according to charging documents.

Augustus Alexander Janifer, 67, was charged after a report of an assault with a weapon at a residence on Hojack Place.

According to the statement, the victims — one identified as a relative of Janifer and the other as an additional individual — told police they were attempting to leave their residence when Janifer arrived home intoxicated. They reported that he allegedly pointed a long gun at them through the front windshield of their vehicle as they tried to drive away.

Janifer admitted there was a rifle inside his residence and gave consent for a search, during which deputies located a rifle and ammunition in his bedroom.

Janifer was initially held without bond after his arrest. At a bond review hearing the next day, Judge Kenneth A. Talley ordered his release on recognizance.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 26 in Charles County District Court.
