CALVERT COUNTY, Md. — The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office has received recent reports of scammers calling citizens while spoofing official phone numbers and even using the names of real deputies in an attempt to gain money and personal information. These calls may sound convincing and often create a false sense of urgency.

What these scammers are saying:

“You have a warrant and must pay immediately to avoid arrest.”
“You missed jury duty and must pay a fine now.”
“There is a legal matter that requires immediate payment.”
“Your information is tied to a criminal investigation.”

What makes this scam dangerous:

Caller ID may appear as the Sheriff’s Office or another legitimate number.
Scammers may provide real deputy names to sound credible.
They often demand immediate payment via gift cards, wire transfer, or other non-traceable methods.

Know this:

The Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call you to demand payment or request gift cards or Bitcoin.
Deputies will NOT threaten arrest over the phone for immediate payment.
Legitimate agencies will NOT pressure you to act instantly.

What to do if you receive a call like this:

Hang up immediately. Do not engage.
Do NOT send money or provide personal or account information.
Verify by calling the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.
Report the incident to local law enforcement.

Protect yourself:

Never provide personal or financial information over the phone unless YOU initiated the contact.
Be cautious of any unexpected call creating urgency or fear.
Remember: Scammers can make any number look real.
