PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — State Sen. Alonzo T. Washington has officially declared his candidacy for Prince George’s County executive, aiming to succeed Angela Alsobrooks as she transitions to the U.S. Senate.
Washington, a Democrat representing District 22, has a longstanding commitment to the county. Born on Sept. 2, 1983, in Washington, D.C., he was raised by his mother, Elizabeth Washington. He graduated from Laurel High School and earned a B.A. in Criminal Justice and Criminology from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2007. His early career included roles as a legislative aide and chief of staff to Prince George’s County Councilman Will Campos.
In 2012, Gov. Martin O’Malley appointed Washington to the Maryland House of Delegates, representing District 22. He served in the House until January 2023, when he was appointed to the Maryland Senate to fill the vacancy left by Paul Pinsky.
Throughout his legislative tenure, Washington has been an advocate for education, economic development, and social justice. He has held leadership positions, including deputy majority whip and vice chair of the Ways and Means Committee.
Washington’s entry into the county executive race adds to a growing field of candidates. His campaign is expected to focus on leveraging his legislative experience to address local issues such as economic inequality, public safety, and educational disparities.
The primary election is scheduled for June 2025, with the general election in November 2025. As the race unfolds, voters will assess Washington’s vision for the county against those of his competitors.
