Engine 54

BUSHWOOD, Md. – In a heartwarming display of solidarity, the Seventh District Volunteer Fire Department welcomed volunteers from the Woodlawn Fire Department of Marion, North Carolina on Saturday evening. This gathering marked a significant moment of support following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.

The Maryland department, having voted to donate their reserve engine to a department in need, hosted their North Carolina counterparts for dinner and an apparatus review. The evening culminated in a formal transfer of ownership, with President Nelson and Past Fire Chief Gibson signing the necessary paperwork.

Engine 54, a 1991 model equipped with a 1500 gpm hale pump and 750-gallon water capacity, was originally purchased under Past Fire Chief Steve Gibson’s direction. The engine, formerly outfitted as a rescue vehicle, came complete with rescue tools, an on-board cascade system, and a generator.

On Sunday morning, the North Carolina crew conducted final checks on the engine before their departure. The Seventh District VFD further supported their peers by loading the engine with additional equipment, including Amkus tools, fire hose, and ventilation fans, to be distributed to other local departments in need.

As the Woodlawn Fire Department embarked on their journey home with their new apparatus, the Seventh District VFD expressed hope that the engine will serve their fellow firefighters well in their recovery efforts. The department also extended well wishes to all those still grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
