St. Mary's County Adjusts Speed Limits on Maryland Route 5

ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. – In a move to enhance roadway safety, new speed limit signs have been installed along Three Notch Road (Maryland Route 5), reducing the maximum speed from 55 mph to 45 mph in select areas. One of the new installations is prominently located next to the St. Mary’s County welcome sign on Three Notch Road heading southbound, signaling the speed reduction as drivers enter the county in Charlotte Hall.

Another sign has been placed on Three Notch Road northbound, just before Commerce Park Road in Mechanicsville, where the maximum speed is now also set at 45 mph. The adjustments appear aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing the risk of accidents along one of the county’s main roads.

  1. Wow… the cops have been missing in action as far as speed traps or just patrolling in general for a good 7 years or more, so who will enforce this? Clowns.

  2. Thats a good start, but how about enforcing the speed limit? What we need is 20 more deputies & 20 more troopers that do nothing but enforce traffic laws. If you can’t hire the LEO’s how about a camera or 2? Or maybe we could leave the speed limit alone and enforce what is there now. Like anonymous said they go 70 in that area and cut the light. Road rage is a factor too.

  3. The answer isn’t reducing the speed limits- there are very few accidents on this stretch of road. The answer is more actual enforcement by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s department and the Maryland State Police. There is nearly zero speed enforcement in the north end. None. However, everyone knows that the cops sit at the HVRS, the water tower, and on the northbound side at Forrest Lake. But let’s be real. The speed limit isn’t the problem. Irresponsible and over development of the north end without upgrading the roads (a service road from Rt. 6 to Golden Beach Road would have been smart development), adding too many lights and lack of enforcement is the issue.

  4. Three Notch Road starts at the Wawa at the route 5 and route 235 split and goes to Ridge. Leonardtown Road is the north part of the county where these new speed limits are in place. When did the name change to Three Notch Road continue past that split?

  5. Let’s slow traffic down to the point where you are better off walking…. great idea for this already congested gridlock area.

  6. lowering speed limits never improves traffic efficiency and rarely improves safety. this is just a ticket production stunt

  7. Thanks for making it even longer to commute! As if the stop lights all the way to the beltway weren’t enough!

  8. HA! Nothing will change because there isn’t enough enforcement. I always said this county needs red light cameras too. The amount of people who drive after the light turns red is astonishing. It never surprises me that there is a horrific accident around here.

  9. You can drop the speed limit to whatever you want to- maybe those who are caught speeding should be held accountable…. vice penalizing everyone else. The people obeying the previous speed of 55 were following the law, and more than likely will continue to obey the new 45 MPH. its the folks that break the law that the law does nothing about. Ridiculous

  10. I think it’s great! I’ve seen drivers barreling through there at 75mph weaving in out of traffic as if it were a race track. About time! Bust em’
