
COLUMBIA, Md – The 2025 National Civics Bee®: Maryland State Finals took place this past weekend at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland, drawing top-performing middle school students from across the state to showcase their knowledge of civics and commitment to community problem-solving. Representing St. Mary’s County, students Harper C., Katia S., and Elisabeth M. stood out as exceptional competitors.
The National Civics Bee®, a highly competitive and inspiring event hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is part of a nationwide initiative to promote civic education and engagement among middle schoolers. Students compete through multiple-choice rounds and present original essays addressing real-world challenges and solutions in their communities.
In a thrilling conclusion to the competition, Katia S. earned first place, impressing judges with her depth of civic understanding and a compelling proposal to address local issues. Her fellow finalist, Harper C., followed closely behind with a second-place finish, demonstrating impressive knowledge and poise throughout the event. Elisabeth M., also from St. Mary’s County, competed with distinction, rounding out a strong trio of representatives for the region.
With her state title, Katia S. now advances to the National Civics Bee® Finals, where she will compete with other state champions for national recognition and scholarship awards.
