At 5:50 p.m. Aug. 21, a serious personal injury crash occurred on Rt. 261 (Bayside Road) at Beach Drive, in Chesapeake Beach.
Investigation revealed that a 1998 Ford Mustang operated by Sonney E. Pickens,16 of Chesapeake Beach, was attempting to proceed south on Rt. 261 from Beach Drive.
He failed to yield to a 2001 Chevrolet SUV operated by Katrina A.ย Jones, 21 of Huntingtown, which was traveling north on Rt. 261.
Jonesโ SUV struck the driverโs side of Pickensโ Mustang. Pickens was trapped in the vehicle and sustained incapacitating injuries.
Jones also sustained injuries (non-incapacitating) and was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital.
Members of the North Beach, Prince Frederick, Dunkirk, Huntingtown, Calvert Advanced Life Support, and the Naval District Washington Volunteer Fire Departments and Rescue Squads responded.
Maryland State Police Med-Evac Helicopter (Trooper 2) transported Pickens to Prince Georgeโs County Shock Trauma.
Various personnel from the Maryland State Police and Calvert County Sheriffโs Office responded to safeguard the scene, attend to the injured and investigate the incident. The road was closed for a short period to safeguard the crash scene and facilitate the investigation, which is continuing.
Later Monday evening, Pickens was transferred to Baltimore Shock Trauma. As of Tuesday he is in critical, but stable condition.
Jones was treated and released from Calvert Memorial Hospital on Monday evening.
