CALIFORNIA, Md. — A protest at the Harris Teeter grocery store on March 9 drew attention not just for its messaging but for the broader political currents it represented. Organized through the Maryland Democratic Party’s activist networks, the demonstration was part of a coordinated response to Elon Musk’s involvement in the Trump administration’s proposed federal budget cuts.

These cuts target a range of programs, including Social Security and cancer research, sparking backlash among progressives.

However, the protest’s location raised eyebrows. Instead of taking place at a government office or corporate headquarters, demonstrators gathered at a Tesla Supercharger station in the Harris Teeter parking lot. Their signs and chants criticized Musk, the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and the broader rollback of social programs. For many bystanders, though, the immediate impact was on Tesla owners who arrived expecting to charge their vehicles, only to find themselves in the middle of a political demonstration.

Protest Organizers and Their Message

The demonstration was part of a broader “Tesla Takedown” campaign occurring nationwide. The Maryland Democratic Party promoted the event on its social media channels, framing it as a grassroots response to Trump’s policies and Musk’s role in implementing them. Several progressive organizations, including Stand Up America, Indivisible Maryland, and members of the 50501 Reddit movement, helped organize and promote the protest.

Though no prominent Democratic officials were present, their messaging echoed statements made days earlier at a larger rally in Annapolis, where Sen. Chris Van Hollen and other Maryland Democrats warned about what they described as increasing corporate influence in government. The Harris Teeter protest followed similar themes, focusing on concerns that Musk’s growing role in federal decision-making was shifting government spending priorities.

Some activists pointed to Musk’s support for cost-cutting measures within federal agencies, arguing that they disproportionately harm lower-income Americans. Others, however, questioned whether targeting Tesla specifically was an effective protest strategy.

Tesla Owners React to Disruptions

For Tesla drivers, the protest was not just a political statement—it was an inconvenience. Some appeared frustrated as they attempted to access the Supercharger. Others engaged in discussions with demonstrators, with reactions ranging from support to strong opposition.

“I bought this car years ago because it was good for the environment, not because I wanted to be part of someone’s political war,” said one Tesla owner, who declined to give his name.

The Tesla Owners Club of Maryland issued a statement in response to the protest, emphasizing that while they were aware of the demonstrations, their organization remains “apolitical” and focused on the interests of Tesla drivers. They urged members to remain respectful and prioritize safety when encountering protests.

Political Responses & Differing Views

Musk himself took to social media to denounce the demonstrations, calling them “coordinated attacks by left-wing groups.” President Trump echoed that sentiment, criticizing the protesters as “radical left lunatics” and suggesting legal measures could be considered to prevent similar disruptions.

Maryland Republicans seized on the Harris Teeter protest to argue that Democrats were sending an anti-business message by targeting one of the most successful American tech companies. Conservative commentators framed the event as an attack on electric vehicle owners rather than a protest against federal budget cuts.

Progressive organizers, however, considered the protest a success. “This isn’t just about Tesla,” one protester said. “It’s about what happens when billionaires buy their way into government and start making decisions that hurt everyday Americans.”

What Comes Next?

The Maryland Democratic Party has continued to highlight concerns about Musk’s political influence, though there is no indication that similar demonstrations will be organized at Tesla charging stations in the near future.

For Tesla owners, the political debate surrounding Musk and his companies is unlikely to subside anytime soon. As Trump and Musk continue their partnership in reshaping federal spending, opposition will likely grow. Whether that opposition will remain focused on Tesla—or take new forms—remains to be seen.

  1. Did not hear a word about this….. BIG impact they made! People are idiots. Tbese cars are about environment nothing to do with Elon and Trump collaboration., which I fully support By the way – This country needs an overhaul. If the dems are so upset….why aren’t they defending the causes they so fully funded? Or did they just siphon the funds?

    1. IT IS about Elon. He’s declared war on the democratic way of life. Let me make that statement simple for you. NOT the Democratic party but the Democratic government. Elon is pushing an autocratic way of government along with Drump.
He uses the billions he has to try and make our country an autocratic country with Drump our Adolf or Mussollini.
I for one WILL park in any of Elons chargers and dare you to do a darn thing. I may be watching from a distance hoping. People aren’t idiots, MAGA are.

    2. “Tbese cars are about environment nothing to do with Elon and Trump collaboration.”

Nope, these cars have everything to do with Musk, especially, blasting his way into Trump’s orbit ($240,000,000 campaign donation) and then siccing his teenage hackers into federal agencies. People are upset and this is how they chose to let those in charge know. I don’t condone what’s happening, but Trump and his co-president need to “read the room.” The Republican Congress has to step up and stop being so afraid of Trump for the good of the country.

  2. “Organized through the Maryland Democratic Party’s activist networks”
Aren’t these the same people that spent $7.5 Billion for a dozen EV charging stations, because ‘THEY’ want everyone to go ‘GREEN’?
Seems like their TDS is either getting worse or they are smoking the “green” instead of going there.

    1. “spent $7.5 Billion for a dozen EV charging stations,”

I’m pretty sure the Maryland Dem Party didn’t spend $7.5 Billion for 12 EV charging stations! But, there are those who want to buy an EV so charging stations are needed, and many EVs are made in the USA (jobs, jobs, jobs). Welcome to the future!

  3. “I bought this car years ago because it was good for the environment, not because I wanted to be part of someone’s political war,” said one Tesla owner, who declined to give his name.

Haha!! You were lied to my friend.

  4. “Organized through the Maryland Democratic Party’s activist networks,…”
Seriously, the Dems in MD have an established activist network? Imagine if the Republicans had such an established network ? The Dems would be howling from the rafters that the Republicans were Nazi’s or KKK sympathizers. Does the head of the MD Democratic party acknowledge they have this organized network?

  5. Maryland Democrats should be worried about higher taxes and spending their time saving MD Residents on taxes. These people add no value to society. Hypocrites, want to go all electric to save the world, but burn down the biggest electric vehicle manufacturer and charging infrastructure based on differing political views. They are a joke!

    1. DOGE cut their taxpayer funded USAID NGO protest fund so he’s their target. They don’t want to get real jobs.

  6. The left always whine and cry when things don’t go their way. When they go out and destroy things the media praises them for it. Thank God Trump won the election. He’s doing his best to keep this country from going bankrupt.

  7. “These cuts target a range of programs, including Social Security and cancer research, sparking backlash among progressives.”

I’m fairly certain backlash to cuts made to Social Security and cancer research have nothing to do with political leaning. More like trying to take away what most of us have worked for and is ours like SS is or have friends, relatives, kids, etc. who have or had cancer.

    1. Yes indeed, those of us that are now getting our SS payments after pumping money into the only legal Ponzi scheme for 50 years, aren’t alarmed by the audits, just those who are intent on padding the pockets from the billions that the SS is getting scammed for.
Some would also say that cancer research is something that grafts our tax dollars to help keep cures away, so that big Pharma can continue to grow and collect on ‘helpful’ drugs.

      1. “those of us that are now getting our SS payments after pumping money into the only legal Ponzi scheme for 50 years, aren’t alarmed by the audits,”

SS is not a Ponzi scheme; it was to protect those who didn’t have enough money to buy food and/or had no savings during and after the Great Depression. About 90 or so years later it’s still needed especially considering the cost of housing, food, etc outpacing salaries. If salaries had kept up with inflation…but they didn’t. SS should not be a political thing; it still works for those needing it. Musk and his teen hackers have no idea what to cut and what to keep; they don’t audit, they slash and burn.

        1. “Musk and his teen hackers have no idea what to cut and what to keep; they don’t audit, they slash and burn.”
You do realize that DOGE can ONLY report what they find.
          and
Yes, when you collect money today, from current workers paychecks and use that current intake to pay today, those of us collecting our SS after paying into it for 50 years, and with no plan, method or intention of growing the incoming money by interest paying means, it is indeed a Ponzi scheme.

          1. “You do realize that DOGE can ONLY report what they find.”

Do you really believe that? Ask all the gov’t workers who have lost their jobs due to Musk not understanding what federal agencies do, and all the contracts he’s cancelled and all the agencies he has upended due to slash and burn. Bottom line, he and his teen hackers should never have been given access to federal agencies.
As for SS being a Ponzi scheme….LOL, SS isn’t fraudulent for starters and there is oversight, etc. Madoff could claim neither to the dupes he sucked in.

  8. “You” people need to stop with this political nonsense. The lies DOGE is pushing/spreading about how they are helping is bunch of bs and it is hurting everyone. Why can’t certain “groups” see that.. just selfish behavior from ignorant “people.”

  9. Funny how their plans produce the opposite results every time. Tesla sales are at an all time high.
