SOUTHERN MARYLAND — From Black History Month celebrations and family-friendly dances to hands-on blacksmith workshops and live performances, Southern Maryland is offering a wide range of events across Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties this weekend and into early March.

Residents can explore local history during the Black History Month Open House at the U.S. Colored Troops Interpretive Center in Lexington Park, step back in time at a Sock Hop in La Plata, or try something new with a beginner-friendly blacksmithing class at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum in St. Leonard.

With book fairs, teen hangouts, educational summits, community fundraisers, theater productions and a full slate of live music, the region continues to showcase the variety of cultural, educational and recreational activities available throughout Southern Maryland.

THINGS TO DO IN CALVERT COUNTY

Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard Solomons Opening Day on Feb. 27, at Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard, 13450 H.G. Trueman Road, Solomons, MD – Rita’s in Solomons opens for the 2026 season at noon, welcoming customers back for Italian ice, frozen custard and seasonal treats.
