Learn How To Bird – SMAS Class on Birdwatching on May 18 (8 am to 11 am), located at Historic Sotterley, 44300 Sotterley Ln, Hollywood, MD – Come learn about identifying birds, how your smart phone can make you an identification expert and how to properly use your binoculars. Immediately following the presentation, Dean Newman, an avid wildlife photographer, speaker and veteran bird guide, will lead a walk around the Historic Sotterly grounds helping you put into practice what you learned earlier. The presentation starts promptly at 8:00 am, please arrive 10-15 minutes prior. We will be meeting in the barn. Please bring binoculars and a field guide (don’t worry if you don’t have). Free Lecture: Life of Garret van Sweringen of 17th-cent. St. Mary’s City on May 23 (7 pm to 8:15 pm), located at Historic St. Mary’s City, 18751 Hogaboom Lane, St. Mary’s City, MD – Garret Van Sweringen, born 1636 in The Netherlands, was among the colonists of 17th-century St. Mary’s City and became one of Maryland’s most influential citizens—innkeeper, coffee house owner, alderman and sheriff. He is the ancestor of thousands of Americans, including at least four governors of Maryland. Researcher Teun van der Vorm takes us into the fascinating life of Garrett van Sweringen and the successful search for his ancestors. The speaker, a genealogical & historical researcher who lives in Rotterdam, regularly publishes in genealogical magazines.
