TikTok's Days Could Be Numbered

Congress passed a bill this week to ban the popular social media app TikTok.

Lawmakers pushed for the ban and President Joe Biden signed it because they think the Chinese company that owns it could use data from the app to spy on Americans.

There is a deal that could be made though that would allow the app to still be used in the United States. The company, ByteDance, just has to sell it.

President Biden set a January 19, 2025 deadline for that sale to happen.

The company is challenging the bill on First Amendment grounds and says they donโ€™t plan on going anywhere.

If ByteDance does not sell, app stores operated by Apple, Alphabet’s Google, and others could not legally offer TikTok or provide Web hosting services to ByteDance-controlled applications or TikTok’s website.

Many are urging the White House to not ban TikTok because 8,000 Americans work for TikTok in New York and California.

170 million Americans use the app.
