WHITE PLAINS, Md. — Girls in Charles County have a chance to try field hockey for free this August before committing to the upcoming season, thanks to a pair of “Try-It” sessions hosted by the Charles County Lacrosse Club (CCLC).
The sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 12, and Thursday, Aug. 14, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and are open to girls in kindergarten through eighth grade. No prior experience is necessary, and equipment will be available to borrow.
“This is our second season offering recreational field hockey for girls right here in Charles County,” said organizers from CCLC. “Whether you’ve never picked up a stick or you’ve played before, this is a great opportunity to give it a try and have fun.”
New to the Game? Here’s What Field Hockey Is All About
Field hockey is a fast-paced, dynamic team sport played worldwide. Players use specially designed sticks to move a small ball across the field, working together to score goals against the opposing team. The game emphasizes agility, strategy, coordination and teamwork — all while keeping kids active and engaged.
Organizers say the clinics are designed to be fun and welcoming, offering participants the chance to learn basic skills like stick handling, passing and teamwork while building confidence on the field.

Try It for Free, Then Join the Team This Fall
Although the event is free, advance registration is required, and a TeamSnap account must be created to sign up. Register for the Try-It sessions.
The Try-It program also leads into CCLC’s 2025 Fall Field Hockey season, which is currently open for registration. The league offers divisions for all ages and experience levels, as well as a high school team/clinic option for players whose schools do not offer field hockey.
While the early bird registration discount expired on Aug. 1, spots remain open and are expected to fill quickly. Register for the fall season.
