WALDORF, Md. — Waldorf has no shortage of spots serving up hot chicken sandwiches, and like many locals, we’re fans. So we decided to check out some of the area’s most popular places.
To be clear, this wasn’t a competition. Everyone has their own preferences for what makes a hot chicken sandwich great. This was a fun way for The BayNet to try out food the community is excited about and support local businesses.
All the stores had great service, with cashiers ready to explain the menus and spice levels. It comes down to what flavors you prefer and what business you choose to support.
There’s also no reason you have to pick just one. We sure didn’t.
Dave’s Hot Chicken
Dave’s Hot Chicken is located at 2471 Crain Highway in Waldorf. Dave’s had a big space for customers to eat in the restaurant, and the decor is sort of funky and urban. You can order online or at the store.
We got the medium-spice sandwich and loved that it had plenty of heat without being overpowering. The pickles also helped balance out the spice.

Hangry Joe’s
You can find Hangry Joe’s at 3248 Crain Highway in Waldorf. Hangry Joe’s also takes online orders. We got the Sando at the medium spice level. You can also get a Jr. Sando, which is more of a slider size if you’re more in the mood for a snack than a meal.
Hangry Joe’s spice levels include no heat, mild, medium, hot and angry hot. But be careful — angry hot is nonrefundable and requires a waiver. Nobody on our team was brave enough for that, but we thought the medium had plenty of heat and great flavor.

HCK Hot Chicken
HCK Hot Chicken is at 3054B Waldorf Market Place. This new shop just opened a couple of weeks ago and is a little different than other hot chicken restaurants because the chicken is “dipped” rather than being made with a rub.
We got the signature Nashville chicken sandwich. The sandwiches are infused with different spices that give different heat levels — we got one of the medium spice levels (again) and picked the habanero. You can also pick from Base (cayenne), Angry Hot (Trinidad scorpion) and Medic (Carolina reaper).

All the sandwiches were great, but HCK Hot Chicken was our team’s favorite for the day. We all agreed that we liked the hint of sweetness, and the spicy kick kept coming.
Of course, the sandwich you like best depends on your preferences and the spice level you choose. Let us know which one is your favorite!
