PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County’s Parks & Recreation, Planning & Zoning and the Health Department are joining forces with CalvertHealth to create “Walktober,” starting Oct. 1.
The joint project is meant to promote the health benefits of walking and spotlight pedestrian safety, health programs and community initiatives, according to the county’s Facebook post.
The planned walks will take place on Oct. 1, 7, 16, 20 and 29. The walks for all the other days will adhere to the following schedule:
Noon on Oct. 1, Oct. 16, Oct. 20, Oct. 29:
- Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park playground
- Hallowing Point Park pavilion
- Solomons Town Center Park pavilion
- King Memorial Park pavilion
- CalvertHealth annex parking lot
5 p.m. on Oct. 1, Oct. 16, Oct. 20, Oct. 29:
- Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park playground
- Hallowing Point Park pavilion
- Solomons Town Center Park pavilion
- North Beach boardwalk entrance
- Solomons Medical Center parking lot
Oct. 7: Noon will meet at Solomons Health Center, and 5 p.m. will meet at Calvert Hospital. You can learn more about the walks in the Calvert Fall Activity Guide.
Walktober is a drop-in activity and doesn’t require any commitment. Instead, the initiative is focused on encouraging people to get outside, get some exercise and connect with others in the community.
Walking is Maryland’s “official exercise,” and Walktober is a statewide event. Towns and counties across the state host their own walks, and residents are encouraged to participate in those or in MDOT’s events. Calvert County has hosted Walktober events in past years with similar goals — to improve health and raise awareness of walkability in our communities.
