CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — Winter weather in Charles County brings more than just school delays—it means slick roads, buried mailboxes, and snow-covered neighborhoods. The county’s Become a Snow-Smart Neighbor gives residents a quick and easy way to learn how the county prepares for and responds to snowstorms, with the added chance to submit a name for a real Charles County snowplow—winners will receive a county swag bag.

This community outreach program walks you through the basics of winter operations in Charles County. You’ll learn what to expect from snowplow crews, how to properly shovel your driveway, and how small actions—like where you park—can make a big difference.

Here are a few key takeaways residents will learn through the Become a Snow-Smart Neighbor:

  • Plowing starts at 1 to 3 inches: Crews begin clearing roads when accumulation reaches this range and melting isn’t expected.
  • Shovel smart: To avoid the “second shovel,” push snow to the right side of your driveway (facing the street). It helps keep the plows from pushing snow back in after you’ve cleared it.
  • Keep your distance: Stay at least 53 feet behind snowplows and other snow equipment.

Visit the Become a Snow-Smart Neighbor page to watch videos and learn more about how Charles County handles snow removal—then take the quiz.

Take the quiz and submit your snowplow name at: engage.charlescountymd.gov/Snow-Smart-Neighbor. The form is open through Jan. 2, 2026.

What To Know About Mailbox Damage

Many residents don’t realize that mailbox damage during snow removal is sometimes eligible for repair or reimbursement. If a county snowplow physically hits your mailbox, the Department of Public Works may either replace it with a standard mailbox and post or offer a $50 reimbursement if you prefer to replace it yourself.

However, if the damage is caused by snow being pushed off the plow blade—rather than a direct hit—the county is not responsible for repairs.

To report potential damage, contact the Roads Division at 301-932-3450 or visit the county’s snow operations webpage for full policy details
