At 3:45 p.m. on Feb. 5, a resident of Port Lane, Lusby (Drum Point), Calvert County, called the Prince Frederick Barrack to report that she had recovered what she believed to be a water-borne mine from the World War I era.
She advised that she located the object on Feb. 3, and pulled it up onto the beach and secured it to a stable object. She further reported markings on the device which supported the possibility that the object was a WWI era mine manufactured by the U.S. Navy.
Trooper J. A. Chirichella responded to the scene and safe-guarded the area until members of the Fire Marshal’s Office could respond.
Fire Marshal Office personnel were able to confirm that the device was “inert” and immediately took possession of it.
The device will be returned to the Department of the Navy.
