MECHANICSVILLE, Md. A Mechanicsville man faces assault charges after court records show a heated political argument with a witness allegedly escalated into a physical altercation where he struck the victim in the back of the head, according to law enforcement. Joseph Dekker Wilson-Wood, 26, of Mechanicsville, was reportedly highly intoxicated during the Oct. 12, 2025, incident, as documented by police.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Oak Ridge Drive on Oct. 12, 2025, for reports of a domestic assault. Court filings indicate deputies made contact with Wilson-Wood sitting on the front porch of the residence. Authorities observed Wilson-Wood was highly intoxicated, and he admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages that day.

Wilson-Wood told deputies he was in a verbal argument with a witness about their political views, according to court records. Documents reveal the victim came out of his bedroom and began a verbal argument with Wilson-Wood due to the loud dispute. Court papers state Wilson-Wood claimed the victim struck him in the face first and that he assaulted the victim back in self-defense. Records show deputies observed a red mark on the left side of Wilson-Wood’s face.

Deputies interviewed the victim about the incident. Court filings indicate the victim stated he overheard a loud argument between Wilson-Wood and a witness in the living room of the residence. Authorities report the victim exited his bedroom to see what the argument was about. Documents reveal a verbal argument ensued between the victim and Wilson-Wood, and Wilson-Wood allegedly struck the victim first in the back of the head. Court papers state the physical altercation continued over the living room couch.

Records show deputies observed the victim had redness to the back of his head and back. Deputies then interviewed a witness who corroborated the victim’s account, according to court filings. Documents indicate the witness confirmed Wilson-Wood assaulted the victim first, contradicting Wilson-Wood’s claim of self-defense.

All parties involved reside together at the residence. Deputies placed Wilson-Wood under arrest and transported him to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center for processing.

Wilson-Wood faces one count of second-degree assault, a misdemeanor carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment and a $2,500 fine.

Wilson-Wood was released on personal recognizance following his initial appearance on Oct. 13, 2025. Court records indicate Wilson-Wood waived his right to an attorney at his initial appearance. No public defender or private counsel has entered an appearance on his behalf.

A trial is scheduled for Nov. 20, 2025, at 9 a.m. in St. Mary’s County District Court. All proceedings will take place in St. Mary’s County District Court in Leonardtown. The State’s Attorney’s Office for St. Mary’s County is prosecuting the assault charge.
