Annual fire hydrant inspections in calvert county

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Annual fire hydrant inspections will begin in Lusby on Tuesday, March 31. Inspections are performed by the Calvert County Department of Public Works, Water and Sewage Division, working with a contractor.

Inspections will begin in Lusby at Southern Connector Boulevard and move south toward Solomons. The contractor will check hydrants for proper operation and perform annual maintenance on them. They’ll also do flow testing, which could result in temporary water discoloration for nearby residents.

Residents who notice discoloration from their taps are advised to run the tap until the water clears. These tests are expected to last two weeks, concluding on April 14.

Regular fire hydrant maintenance ensures hydrants are ready to be used by local fire departments when there’s a crisis. Annual repairs also help the hydrant last as long as possible, staving off possible replacement needs.

There are approximately 750 traditional fire hydrants in Calvert County. Calvert also utilizes dry hydrants to assist local firefighters. Dry hydrants are pipes connected to a body of water, usually a lake or pond, so firefighters can connect to them and use them as a water source for fighting fires. With federal grant money secured by the nonprofit Southern Maryland Resource Conservation and Development Inc., dry hydrants have been installed in nearly 35 places in Southern Maryland.

Residents can learn more about the hydrant inspection process online or by contacting the Water and Sewage Division at 410-535-1600, ext. 2329.
