SOLOMONS, Md. — A 56-year-old Capitol Heights man is facing a trespassing charge after he allegedly returned to a Solomons hotel that he had been officially banned from three years ago, apparently to get a free cup of coffee.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at approximately 9:33 a.m. The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Quality Inn on Lore Road after the owner reported that a man who had been previously trespassed was in the hotel lobby.
According to the statement of probable cause, the owner provided deputies with a copy of a trespass order issued by the Maryland State Police on July 15, 2022. The order explicitly banned Melvin Oneil Jefferson from the Quality Inn and the adjacent Angler’s Seafood Bar and Grill.
Hotel surveillance footage from that morning showed a man, whom a deputy later identified as Jefferson, walk into the lobby and wait behind a short wall before approaching the coffee station. The owner is then seen noticing the man, waving him out and physically placing his hand between the coffee maker and a cup Jefferson had grabbed. Jefferson then complied and left the building.
Jefferson was no longer on the scene when deputies arrived. He has been charged via a criminal summons with trespassing on private property. The charge is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $500. Court records show a preliminary inquiry for the case is scheduled for Sept. 8, 2025.
