CALVERT COUNTY, Md. – On Tuesday, March 5th, Sheriff Ricky Cox and the Calvert County Board of Commissioners held two ribbon-cutting ceremonies to unveil the newest Dunkirk and Lusby District Stations.
The Dunkirk District Station was located at 10500 Southern Maryland Blvd, Dunkirk. The Lusby District Station is located at 11780 HG Trueman Road, Lusby, MD.
The press room at the Dunkirk District Station was filled with many uniformed officers, county workers, media, and supporters of the progress being made on this occasion.
Commissioner Catherine M. Grasso was first to approach the podium to address the crowd as Dunkirk is within the 3rd district that she oversees.
“Today means the world for the community. I’ve lived in Calvert for almost 49 years now and over time, we’ve seen a rise in crime in this county. I used to be able to go out and buy milk at ten o’clock at night and think nothing of it. Now, I wouldn’t even take the chance because I know we’ve had people coming into our county that have robbed us, shot us, shot one of our police officers, and have meant us harm.”
Addressing what this addition to our police stations would do, she stated, “To have a presence here is an absolutely exciting time and will provide our county peace of mind to know that our officers will now be in three locations instead of one. This should send a message – we do chase. You come into Calvert County, we are going to get you. You’re not going to be waiting a couple of years to be tried and convicted; we move very quickly down here to keep our county safe.”
“The county government, the board of county commissioners, Sheriff Cox, and our police officers have a wonderful relationship so this event is a celebration. I am the daughter of a career police officer in the district, so I have a special place in my heart for the men and women in blue. I support the Sheriff 110 percent; he has done a wonderful job,” Grasso ended.
Sheriff Cox was next up to speak, beginning by saying, “I take it personally that Commissioner Grasso doesn’t feel safe to go out and get milk at night. The crime that is coming in from PG and Anne Arundel is real and this is the purpose of why we are here today.”
Bringing up the history of Calvert’s police force, he said, “As we celebrate 370 of being a sheriff’s department since 1654, we had one office building with one jail cell. Being here today, in this building, is very historic. We are going to start having to prepare for the future and this is it. Dunkirk, the way it is today, with the traffic, our responses – it’s tough. It’s safer at the same time keeping deputies up here like we should, that’s the goal. A better response time; that is what the public is getting.”
“People won’t have to drive to Prince Frederick anymore to do a child exchange or report a crime, they can come here and have their needs met right where they live. Lastly, having a true presence in Dunkirk, having a big sheriff’s sign out here, the cruisers out front, gives us the visibility that is needed. This will deter a lot of crime that will enhance safety for everyone,” Cox concluded.
Everyone filed out to witness Cox cut the ribbon draped outside the front door of the future station, marking the official beginning of this endeavor.

How about addressing how people drive here instead of worrying about sheriffs stations which are not needed?
This is so dumb, their theory is to deter crime from other Counties. How’s that working out?
